Watermarked Above and Below

“Above and Below” Original Artwork

This is the first of two canvases depicting life from below the pond through to the birds in the sky (see “Above and Beyond”). It depicts an English wild pond, ‘sliced’ in half to show the myriad forms of life both above and below the surface. Some of the wildlife featured are creatures that once flourished in our countryside which are now on the endangered species list. I was inspired to paint these utopian images to remind us of the magic of metamorphosis, and the perfection of the natural order of life. I wonder how long  it might take a little child in your life to notice the synchronised swimming duck or the vole her golden pince-nez?

Original artwork  30’’ x 20” (762mm x 508mm) Acrylic on canvas board.

Watermarked Above and Beyond

“Above and Beyond” Original Artwork

The second of two canvases depicting pond life. Here, the view is of the surface of the pond through to the creatures who thrive on its banks and verges, and up to the birds in the trees and the sky. This is a painting of an English wild pond, showing the myriad forms of life both above and beyond the surface of the water. (see also “Above and Below”) Many of the wildlife featured are creatures that once flourished in our countryside but are now on the endangered species list. I was inspired to paint these utopian images to remind us of the magic of metamorphosis, and the perfection of the natural order of life. How long might it take a little child in your life to notice the birth of the dragon fly or the little flower fairy intent on disturbing the frog?

Watermarked Don’t Forget The Honey Mummy

“Don’t Forget the Honey Mummy” Original Artwork

Mother Bear takes a rest from her fishing to watch her young cub as he follows his instinct and his love of honey up a tree towards a tricky looking bee hive. Meanwhile, the fish are making a quick getaway up stream. The lovely big fish in the forefront of this painting was inspired by a magnificent fish in Alan Aldridges’ wonderful book ‘The Butterfly Ball & The Grasshopper’s Feast’.

Original artwork: 24” x 18” (610mm x 457mm) Acrylic on canvas frame.

Watermarked Weedy Sea Dragons

“Weedy Sea Dragons” Original Artwork

I painted this picture simply because I fell in love with these ornately camouflaged little creatures. Found on the western and southern coast of Australia, Weedy Sea Dragons tumble and drift along in the current, feeding on sea lice and blending in perfectly with the seagrass and kelp forests of their habitat. A relation of the Sea Horse, Leafy Sea Dragon and Pipefish, they can grow up to 18 inches (46 centimetres) in length. They have no known predators; however, the Australian government has placed them on the “near threatened” list due to divers taking them for pets.

Original artwork: 24” x 18” (610mm x 457mm) Acrylic on canvas frame.

Part of a private collection.
